4-Hers ham it up during Pickle Power, a decision making activity at 4-H Club Day on Feb. 25. The 4-Hers choose from several difficult situations (someone is in a “pickle”), then talk to a moderator about what they would do to get out of that situation. It is a fun event and the kids get a pickle for their efforts, according to event leader Nancy Pihl. Pictured are (from left) Landon Roberts, Charlie Peters and Morgan Gaines.

So proud of my parents

Jon Wolf, retired professor of horse science at Black Hawk College East Campus, third from left, was inducted into the Black Hawk College East Foundation Wall of Fame at a ceremony Tuesday. His portrait, center, was unveiled as the latest addition to the display. From left are Black Hawk College President Dr. Thomas Baynum; Wolf’s wife, Jane; Steve Spivey, president of the foundation, presenting Wolf with a recognition plaque; Chanda Dowell, vice president for the East Campus; and Liz Breedlove, executive director of the foundation.

Alfalfa

While helping Ryan load the drill, I decided I needed to take this picture.  Isn't that the prettiest K-State purple alfalfa seed you have ever seen?

Livestock Judging

Livestock Judging at the Newton Invitational is always a great experience. But, it is usually cold.  Charlie did quite a little walking that day.  He consumed about two cups of hot chocolate and judged as fast as he could!

Smokey Quartz

We went on a rock hunt for the mineral smokey quartz. We were successful in finding what we wanted.  The kids really got into looking for it once they figured out what it was and how to find it.

A sample of our smokey quartz.

Cake in a Cup
I found this recipe on Pinterest and tried it.  You take an angel food cake mix and any other flavor cake mix and dump them into a plastic bag and combine the two.  Then you take 3 Tbsps of cake mix and 2 Tbsps of water and combine them in a coffee cup and microwave for 1 minute.  Not good, unless you enjoy eating a sponge.  My eight year old boy who usually eats anything, politely put it down and said he was full after one bite.

Candy and her baby
One of our favorite times of the year is when the heifers are calving.  Although it takes a lot of around the clock work, we love to have those babies around.  This is one of Charlie's 4H heifers from last year.  It is quite the thing to watch this pair as this heifer truly loves her baby.  You can hear it in the way she talks to her.

4H Geology

We have been growing crystals for a lesson in 4H geology.  The top one is a "snow flake crystal" made from borax.  The second one is a geode crystal in an egg shell made from salt.  This was a fun activity.

If you are viewing my blog, please don't be shy.  I love to hear feedback!

Whoa

I don't know where the time has gone.  I suppose Ryan and the kids have had my hands tied with all of their activities and little jobs for me to do.  We finally got done working the fall cows and calves, and got all the spring cows out on stalks.

Charlie is playing in a 2nd grade basketball league and that will be occupying some weekday evenings and weekends.  We are looking for to watching some NFR next week.  Charlie will be judging at the Kansas Beef Expo next Friday.  Another day out of school!

It is the last day of November, so I better get our xmas picture taken so I can get it printed and mailed out.  Will be posting pics of the calves for sale here in a day or so but go ahead and take a look at the ones I took earlier in the year in the posts up to September if you are curious.

Have a good one,
Jamie

A Good Rain

Well I spent last week helping Ryan get some wheat planted.  Even spent my birthday in the tractor.  Some people believed that it was too early, but when everyone else in the community is planting, you hate to be just sitting at home.  It was good that we spent the time to get the wheat in when we did as the last two days mother nature has provided us with a two inch nice rain.  Some of the wheat is already up and looking good.  Now on to some cattle pictures.  When the sun comes out, I will be out there too.  Jamie

Riding Lessons

Ashley preparing Molly for a ride.
It is so good to see Ashley having fun on a horse.

Many of you may already know, but Ashley had a little mishap with a horse last fall that was pretty scary for her.  She pretty much has been scared of horses since. I have gotten her mini's and now a shetland to try to get her back into loving horses.  She likes to go out and brush them every once in a while but not much interested in a ride.  So, it makes my heart happy to have found someone to give her walk trot lessons on a pleasure horse.  Ashley really enjoys riding now.

What's Jamie up to now?

People always ask "So what's Jamie up too?"  Well, this is one of the things.  She's a pretty handy little woodworker.

Innocent

Some of the most innocent things in life... a 5 year old and an orphaned twin calf.
